French Roast

Great first experience with Woken! Loved the deep flavors and smell of chocolate in this coffee. Very tasty :)

This French Roast is so good. My first time trying Woken coffee, and I'm definitely impressed. I'll be ordering more from this company!

I like to try out different coffees, and I really like French roast. This is the first time I tried any from Woken. The bag was stamped on the bottom with a use by date which is always appreciated. When I opened the bag, I found a nice, dark, ground coffee with a great aroma. I brewed up a cup with 180F water in my Aeropress. Yum. This is a full bodied French roast with just a touch of bitterness at the end of the sip. Not bitter in a bad way, just a hint of bitter that I often get with French roasts that I like. Coffee is good and fresh, and exactly as expected. No surprises here. Very good but not exceptional.

I used the same amount of coffee I typically use to brew a carafe. The result was a brew that wasn't nearly as strong as I typically get using the pour over method - in fact, it seemed "weak." I thought the flavor wasn't deep or complex, and didn't have any distinctly identifiable flavor notes.
For my second carafe of coffee, I used twice as much coffee as I typically use. This resulted in a brew that was fairly close to what I like. There was some depth of flavor, with maybe just an almost detectable note of chocolate. This cup was drinkable, but still lacked the depth and complexity I was hoping for. On the positive side, there was no bitterness or excess acidity.
Using compostable packaging is nice, though I found it challenging to open as I like to pull the bag apart at the top seam so I can use the included wire to reclose the bag. Of course, I could have just cut it open. Since every little bit helps in terms of sustainability, the packaging for the ground coffee is a small plus; for their Nespresso Compatible Pods, this would be a big plus.
Given that this sells for $1.25 / ounce and the coffee I usually buy is available on Amazon for less than that, requires half as much coffee per cup, and has a better, deeper, more complex character, I'll switch back after this bag is done.
